The young elf’s eyes widened in surprised upon hearing his name. How did this strange river woman know his name? Most didn’t bother to learn it. He stared at her for a moment or two, before moving ever closer to the water’s edge against his better judgement. “You…you know my name? How do you know my name?” He sat down at the edge of the water, watching her.
“No, it’s alright. I’ve read that book a dozen times now, so there’s really no need to apologize.” He paused, unsure of what to stay next. “Why did you choose to come out of hiding and say hello to me, then? Was it because I spotted you?”
“I watch and listen. I’ve heard a few others call you by name.” She stepped closer to the edge of the river and rested her small arms on the land. He didn’t seem to be afraid of her so that was a good sign at least.
She giggled a bit at his question and gave a small shrug. “Yes and no. I don’t usually reveal myself to others when I leave The Old Forest. My husband and I don’t really take it upon ourselves to disturb or interrupt the lives of others unless asked really. I just like to watch the comings and goings of other people, yourself included. But well…” She giggled again and began to feel rather bashful, a rosy blush settling on her fair cheeks. “I suppose I did a rather poor job this time as you found me.”
“Don’t…you get lonely? Just watching people and not interacting?” Rumil wasn’t afraid of her at all. He was a bit startled by her presence at first, but her demeanor seemed sweet and genuine. She was odd, this River Lady, and he couldn’t help but be curious. He cocked his head to the side and then grinned a little.
“Yes, I think that you did. Though now that I have found you, I would like to know your name. You know, since you know mine. I wouldn’t want to be rude by just calling you River Lady.” Rumil gave her a sheepish little smile.
